A 19th century terracotta bojito from the eastern Spanish region of Catalonia.

These vessels made of porous clay and traditional to Spain, are containers designed to carry water, frequently used by farmers in rural fields to keep water cool under lengthened spells of sunny conditions. The botijo, acting as an evaporative cooler, more conventionally held a handle straddling over the vessel’s shoulders and had two spouts, one larger and the other thinner.

This is a style atypical to usual design, as the the larger spout, normally used to pour water into, rises straight out the top of the black structure with a shorter handle connecting the shoulder to its neck.  A conical drinking spout protrudes from the opposite shoulder, creating a strikingly balanced silhouette with beautiful terracotta and light grey cracks and chips marbling through the visual appeal of this weighty piece.
