A three legged stool, carved from a single piece of hardwood, circa 1940.

This piece is believed to be from the Hehe peoples, a fearlessly warring tribe, of the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, located in Eastern Africa.

Where most stools would have been specially hand carved for a specific individual and used as a status symbol and stool, many Bantu stools can be recorded as having been used for milking cows or goats.

The rim of the stool is etched with a repeating simplistic, linear design and each leg contains a notch at the base of each shoulder so as to delineate the curvature of the bottom of the stool.
