A postmodern hand-blown glass compote dish, by Krosno, Poland.

1980s.

Compote dishes emerged within middle-class households in the 19th century to present special desserts, fruits or sweets, and other foods.

The elongated base of these particular show pieces provided great inspiration for the renowned collection of jellyfish and octopus inspired glass-blown art designed by Ella Jankowska-Fishmand, who emerged with freshness and modernity under her father’s mentorship, artist & glass blower Jozef Jankowski, who founded Krosno in 1980.

She was known for her expressive style, beautiful and elegant shapes, whilst conserving the valued techniques of glass blowing which date back to the 10th century.

A translucent and warm aubergine coloured dish is upheld here with a graceful stem that branches out into three fluid, tentacle-like strands, almost giving off the appearance of algae drifting in the water, a layer of clear glass enveloping each component before reuniting towards the base.
