This antique silver electroplated compote dish by Elkington & Co. is elegant and stately in its silhouette, taking inspiration from classical Greek pottery and catapulting elements of the style into a more contemporary design that would have been considered en vogue around 1924, the year this piece was produced according to the date letter ‘M’ engraved on the bottom of the dish.

The silver manufacturer was founded in Birmingham in the 1830s and remained operation until the 1960s.

Its handles, like ribbons, are elegantly exaggerated, yet still delicate in their appearance. Splitting into two towards the rim of the dish, the handles’ peaks are adorned with a frond-like motif.

Atop a soft and curved stem with a fluted base sits a shallow dish with a banded cutout of contrasting and angular elements displaying small squares gathered in a zig-zag pattern that is neatly wrapped under a thin, protruding rim with small linear ridges.

Height 14,5 cm
Diameter of Dish 15,3 cm

A Long Term Silver Cloth is recommended for the desired removal of tarnishing marks and to enhance shine. Alternatively, a clean cotton or flannel cloth doused in silver-safe polish can be used.
