Qalamdans, translated from the Persian language as a box for pen storage, were travelling quill or reed pen holders with inkwells attached, often used by official calligraphers and itinerary scribes who would travel for business or attendants posted near a city gate who would write out legal or administrative documents for illiterate citizens.

These cases were were made to be portable and protective of their delicate contents, oftentimes worn attached to or hanging under people’s belts.

This Ottoman qalamdan dates back to around the latter half of the 19th century, rectangular in shape with a crown-like lid and is flanked by a barrel shaped inkwell with a scalloped cover.

Preserved in wonderful condition, a light patina has blunted its shine, softened once crisp edges and gently faded intricate engravings of feathers and other geometric etchings.

Feathers were favoured by Ottoman rulers, becoming popular in the 16th century as they held connotation to royal Mongol princes who first began adorning their headdresses w eagle feathers, representing glory and achievement.

Feathers were also often adorned by Janissaries, elite soldiers who worked under the Sultan.

They wore aigrette feathers, which also bore an association with the mythical Huma bird, a symbol of prosperity in Persian tradition.
