Upon their arrival over four centuries ago, the Maasai built an economy and way of life deeply intertwined with their cattle herds in the Great Rift Valley of southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.

Many, if not all, parts of the cattle were used in trade, including their horns to create everyday objects.

This pair of vintage salt and pepper shakers, from Kenya, is no exception.

Made of bovine horn and hand-painted with small and delicate, dark, circular motifs throughout, the shakers contain a small side insert and are a contrasting light and dark from different parts of the horn, in order to mimic the natural shape.
